{"id":6373,"date":"2024-06-23T11:21:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-23T15:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stillcoviding.ca\/en\/?p=6373"},"modified":"2024-06-24T04:09:07","modified_gmt":"2024-06-24T08:09:07","slug":"uk-covid-hospitalisations-increase-following-emergence-of-new-variant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stillcoviding.ca\/en\/news\/uk-covid-hospitalisations-increase-following-emergence-of-new-variant\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Covid hospitalisations increase following emergence of new variant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Experts have warned that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/covid\">Covid<\/a> \u201chasn\u2019t gone away\u201d after an uptick in infections and hospitalisations that is thought to have been caused by new variants of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>A group of Covid mutations has recently emerged and is collectively referred to as FLiRT.<\/p>\n<p>According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), Covid hospital admissions increased by 24 per cent in the week to Sunday, with a rate of 3.31 per 100,000 people compared with 2.67 per 100,000 in the previous week.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Lawrence Young, a virologist at Warwick University, said the figures should serve as a \u201cwake-up call\u201d to those who think the virus has gone away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe virus hasn\u2019t gone away and is certainly not a seasonal infection,\u201d he told the <em>i<\/em> newspaper. \u201cA combination of new, more infectious virus variants and waning immunity is very likely contributing to these increased levels of infection.
