{"id":9095,"date":"2025-08-19T08:56:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T12:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stillcoviding.ca\/en\/?p=9095"},"modified":"2025-08-26T22:22:49","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T02:22:49","slug":"wildfire-smoke-far-more-dangerous-to-health-than-thought-say-scientists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stillcoviding.ca\/en\/news\/wildfire-smoke-far-more-dangerous-to-health-than-thought-say-scientists\/","title":{"rendered":"Wildfire smoke far more dangerous to health than thought, say scientists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Choking smoke spewed by wildfires is far more dangerous than previously thought, a new <a target=\"_blank\" lang=\"en\" href=\"https:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S2542519625001743\">study<\/a> has found, with death tolls from short-term exposure to fine particulates underestimated by 93%.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers found that 535 people in <a target=\"_blank\" lang=\"en\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/europe-news\">Europe<\/a> died on average each year between 2004 and 2022 as a result of breathing in the tiny toxic particles known as PM2.5 that are released when wildfires rage.<\/p>\n<p>Under standard methods, which assume PM2.5 from wildfires is as deadly as from other sources, such as traffic, they would have expected just 38 deaths a year.<\/p>\n<p>The study comes as <a target=\"_blank\" lang=\"en\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/aug\/18\/wildfires-spain-portugal-heat-extreme-temperatures-southern-europe\">wildfires ravage southern Europe<\/a>, and new data from EU fire monitors shows that 895,000&nbsp;hectares (2.2m&nbsp;acres) have burned so far in 2025, breaking records for this time of year. They have pumped out more than twice the amount of PM2.5 that wildfires have generated on average by this point in the year over the last two decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPreviously, people assumed the same toxicity for wildfire particles and all particles,\u201d said Prof Cathryn Tonne, an environmental epidemiologist at the Barcelona Institute for Global <a target=\"_blank\" lang=\"en\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/health\">Health<\/a> (ISGlobal) and co-author of the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur paper shows evidence that \u2013 although it happens less often \u2013 the health impact for the same amount of particles is stronger for wildfire particles,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Dirty air is one of the biggest threats to human health, and research suggests wildfires are a significant contributor to the vast death toll.
