What We\u2019ve Learned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year on this date, I <a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/Analysis\/2024\/12\/31\/COVID-19-Turns-Five-Next-Pandemic-Lurking\/\" target=\"_blank\" lang=\"en\">published<\/a> a Tyee article about the fifth anniversary of the first public announcement of what we now know as COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>My conclusions then were that we hadn\u2019t learned much from the experience. A year later, many of us have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/how-does-alberta-s-covid-19-vaccination-rate-compare-to-other-provinces-we-asked-9.7022159\" target=\"_blank\" lang=\"en\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unlearned the value of vaccination<\/a>. Outbreaks of measles and whooping cough have predictably followed. Alberta has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rmoutlook.com\/beyond-local\/alberta-quietly-ends-public-reporting-of-covid-outbreaks-in-acute-care-11639112\" target=\"_blank\" lang=\"en\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stopped reporting<\/a> COVID-19 in hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>But looking back over the past year, I can see that some of us have learned a lot. For example, a Toronto hospital is now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/this-is-preventative-medicine-toronto-hospital-starts-1-million-fund-to-help-patients-with-rent\/article_af7209dc-dcb1-4cab-91da-e22954869844.html\" target=\"_blank\" lang=\"en\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">helping patients pay their rent<\/a>, giving them a financial \u201cvaccination\u201d against eviction and homelessness \u2014 conditions known to produce bad health outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re also learning, for example, how such viruses can spread through the air, and what their long-term impacts can be on us and our children \u2014 not to mention our politics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last year on this date, I <a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/Analysis\/2024\/12\/31\/COVID-19-Turns-Five-Next-Pandemic-Lurking\/\" target=\"_blank\" lang=\"en\">published<\/a> a Tyee article about the fifth anniversary of the first public announcement of what we now know as COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>My conclusions then were that we hadn\u2019t learned much from the experience.
