COVID-19 vaccines

Overview

In 2026-2027, three COVID-19 vaccines will be available in Canada: the Moderna Spikevax, Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty, and Sanofi Nuvaxovid vaccines. In most provinces/territories, all three vaccines will be available via publicly funded programs. Limited quantities of the free doses of the Nuvaxovid vaccine will be available. Only vaccines that Health Canada has approved for use will be administered.

Nuvaxovid (formerly Novavax) COVID-19 vaccine

The Nuvaxovid (formerly Novavax) COVID-19 vaccine will be available in the Yukon, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Nunavut has not announced details for its vaccine program yet.

Sanofi provides doses in boxes of ten — so it would be helpful to sign up ahead of time. Some community activists in Ontario and Quebec have organized sign up lists. On September 30 and October 1, twenty people received doses at a pharmacy in Ottawa. They were likely the first people to receive Nuvaxovid vaccine doses in Canada since 2024.

Alberta

Starting October 19, 2026, COVID-19 vaccines will be available free of charge to Albertans. The Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty, Moderna Spikevax, and Sanofi Nuvaxovid vaccines will be available. People 12 years and older who do not qualify for the publicly funded vaccines can purchase the vaccine at pharmacies.

Children 6 months and up to 11 years of age who are eligible can receive vaccines free of charge through Primary Care Alberta public health clinics. Children who do not meet eligibility criteria can access the vaccine with a fee of $100 per dose or series.

Nuvaxovid (formerly Novavax) vaccine

The Nuvaxovid COVID-19 vaccine will be available until it expires in December 2026. Limited quantities are available at select public health and community health centres, and community pharmacies.

British Columbia

Vaccine appointments are available now. At the start of the vaccination program, only mRNA vaccine doses were available. Very limited quantities of the Nuvaxovid vaccine are available free of charge, at some public health units. For information about the availability of vaccines in British Columbia, read the recent updates by our friends at DoNoHarm BC.

  • Vaccines are available for COVID-19 and influenza.
  • Notifications began for priority populations on October 5, 2026.
  • Notifications will continue and will expand to the general population through early November 2026.
  • New this year: Seniors aged 75 years and older, and Indigenous people aged 60 years and older, are eligible for the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine.

Manitoba

 

Nuvaxovid (formerly Novavax) vaccine

New this year: the Nuvaxovid COVID-19 vaccine will be available through select Public Health locations for people 12 years of age and older who are unable or not interested in receiving an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. People who are interested in receiving the Nuvaxovid vaccine should contact their nearest Public Health Office, or the provincial call centre at 1-844-626-8222 to find a location offering this vaccine. Expiry date for the Nuvaxovid vaccine: December 31, 2026.

New Brunswick

In 2026-2027: the Department of Health will be offering a COVID-19 vaccine at no cost to New Brunswick residents. This year the COVID-19 vaccine will target the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron XFG variant. Publicly funded Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty and Moderna Spikevax COVID-19 vaccines will be available at pharmacies.

A limited supply of Nuvaxovid vaccine doses will be available for people who cannot receive an mRNA vaccine due to an allergy or medical condition. You may contact your local public health office to schedule an appointment to receive a vaccine dose.

Newfoundland and Labrador

Starting on October 19, 2026, COVID-19 and flu vaccines will be available to people aged six months and older.

The Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty and Moderna Spikevax COVID-19 vaccines will be available. Limited numbers of doses of the Sanofi Nuvaxovid vaccine will be available at Public Health vaccination clinics.

Northwest Territories

Any resident of the Northwest Territories who is six months of age or older may receive a dose of a COVID-19 vaccine via the publicly funded vaccination program. The Moderna Spikevax and Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccines will be available. Doses of COVID-19 and influenza vaccines will be available at vaccination clinics in Yellowknife, Fort Smith, and other communities, starting on October 19, 2026.

Nova Scotia

Starting on October 8, 2026, people can make appointments to receive free COVID-19 and influenza vaccine doses. These are recommended for everyone aged six months and older.

Nova Scotians can get the COVID-19 and influenza vaccines from participating family doctors, nurse practitioners, family practice nurses, pharmacies, public health offices and mobile units. People have several options for booking an appointment:

Family booking is available again this year, allowing someone to book up to six people for a single appointment.

Nuvaxoid (formerly Novavax) vaccine

Nova Scotia Health did not mention the Nuvaxoid vaccine in details about the 2026–2027 vaccination program — leading to a lot of confusion. Some people started to make plans to travel to neighbouring provinces, in search of a Nuvaxovid vaccine dose.

However, there is some good news: the Nuvaxovid vaccine will be available in Nova Scotia, to people with known contraindications to mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. You can talk to a healthcare provider, such as a doctor or a pharmacist, and they may order a Nuvaxovid vaccine dose if it is a good option for you. Don’t use the public booking system — it does not allow you to select the type of vaccine.

The province updated its policies recently. These policies are detailed in one of Nova Scotia’s immunization manuals, Publicly Funded Respiratory Virus Immunizations: Information for Healthcare Professionals 2026–2027 [PDF].

“NUVAXOVID®, a protein subunit vaccine, will be available in limited supply for individuals with documented allergies or contraindications to mRNA products or any of their components.

Providers requiring an alternative product for clients with documented allergies or sensitivities to a routinely offered product or any of its components are asked to contact the Provincial BioDepot at PublicHealthVaccineOrders@nshealth.ca. The BioDepot will arrange for the alternative product to be included in your next scheduled order.”

The Vaccine Toolkit for Providers was updated on October 7, 2026. Some pharmacists and doctors may not be aware that the Nuvaxovid vaccine is available in Nova Scotia. You can print or email a copy of the updated immunization manual, or send a link to the manual.

Nunavut

In previous years, Iqaluit Public Health has organized walk-in vaccination clinics offering COVID-19 and flu vaccines for all eligible Nunavummiut aged six months and older. Dates for the vaccination clinics have not been announced yet.

The Nunavut Immunization Manual (August 2026) lists only one COVID-19 vaccine: Moderna Spikevax. It does not mention the Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty or Sanofi Nuvaxovid vaccines.

Ontario

In 2026-2027: Ontario will offer two mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, Moderna Spikevax and Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty, and one protein-based COVID-19 vaccine, Sanofi Nuvaxovid (formerly Novavax). The Nuvaxovid vaccine could be a good option for people who are allergic to polyethylene glycol (PEG), an ingredient in the mRNA vaccines; and some people have fewer side effects.

Publicly funded vaccines in Ontario

Starting at the end of September/early October: COVID-19 vaccines will be available for free, for people who live, work, or go to school in Ontario.

  • People who belong to high-risk or priority populations may receive COVID-19 vaccine dose(s), starting the week of September 28, 2026.
  • General public: people who do not belong to high-risk or priority populations may receive COVID-19 vaccine dose(s), starting on October 26, 2026.
  • Initially, only the Moderna Spikevax vaccine will be available via the publicly funded program. Starting the week of October 26, 2026, pharmacies may order Sanofi Nuvaxovid and Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty vaccine doses. We can expect these publicly funded doses to be available starting in November 2026.

Purchasing Nuvaxovid vaccine doses in Ontario

The Nuvaxovid COVID vaccine is available for private purchase in Ontario now ($150–$175 per dose), at select pharmacies that have placed orders directly with Sanofi. That could be an option if you do not live, work, or study in Ontario. It could also be an option if you need a Nuvaxovid vaccine dose soon, before the publicly funded doses are available. For example: you may have a medical appointment, and you want to have an extra layer of protection.

Prince Edward Island

Starting in October 2026, Health PEI Public Health Nursing will offer COVID-19, influenza, and RSV vaccines at community vaccination clinics at locations across the province. COVID-19 and flu vaccines may also be available through your family doctor or nurse practitioner, and at pharmacies across the province.

COVID-19 vaccines will be available free of charge to residents of PEI (including students who do not have a PEI Health Card). People who do not live in PEI will not be charged for the cost of the vaccine, but may be charged an administration fee.

Nuvaxoid (formerly Novavax) vaccine

A limited number of doses of the Nuvaxovid COVID-19 vaccine will be available at public health nursing clinics for the 2026-2027 season for people 12 years of age and older with known contraindications to mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. The Nuvaxovid vaccine will only be offered to people with a known contraindication, and cannot be requested based on personal preference.

Quebec

Starting on October 13, 2026, Quebecers will be able to make appointments to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and the flu. You can book an appointment on the Clic Santé platform.

The first appointments will start on October 20, 2026. This year, free COVID-19 and flu vaccinations will be reserved for vulnerable groups. If you are not a senior, chances are you will have to pay for your vaccine doses at a pharmacy.

Three COVID-19 vaccines will be available via the publicly funded program:

  • Moderna Spikevax
  • Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty
  • Sanofi Nuvaxovid (at public vaccination clinics)

Nuvaxoid (formerly Novavax) vaccine

The Nuvaxovid vaccine will be available free of charge at some public vaccination clinics, if you meet the eligibility criteria. If you are not eligible for the publicly funded Nuvaxovid vaccine, it is still possible to purchase a dose of Nuvaxovid at a pharmacy.

Saskatchewan

Beginning October 6, 2026, Saskatchewan residents can start booking appointments to receive COVID-19 and influenza vaccinations. COVID-19 and influenza vaccinations are free of charge to all people aged 6 months and older. Vaccinations are available at public health clinics, participating pharmacies, and some physician and nurse practitioner offices.

Children aged six months up to five years can only be immunized at a Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) public health clinic, public health office, or by a physician or nurse practitioner.

Yukon

Yukoners can now book appointments for vaccines. Visit Yukonimmunization.ca for information about vaccines, local clinic availability and appointment bookings. Appointments are also available at participating community pharmacies and local health centres. Some health centres may accept walk-ins, but booking an appointment is recommended.

Three COVID-19 vaccines will be available in the Yukon:
