COVID, flu vaccine uptake low in Alberta heading into holiday season

With vaccination numbers lagging and the holiday season approaching, health experts are calling on Albertans to roll up their sleeves for their flu and COVID-19 shots.

As of Nov. 25, 17 people in Alberta had died of the flu during this respiratory virus season, and close to 500 were hospitalized, according to provincial data. In the same time frame, 245 deaths and almost 2,300 hospitalizations were tied to COVID-19.

COVID-19 shrinks life expectancy in S. Korea for first time since 1970

Babies born in South Korea last year are expected to live 82.7 years, down from 83.6 years in 2021, the statistics agency said on Friday, after life expectancy fell in 2022 for the first time since 1970, hit by a spike in deaths linked to COVID-19.

Following a global trend of such declines over the past few years, the OECD grouping said last month that average life expectancy had dipped 0.7 years across its 39 member nations between 2019 and 2021.

COVID-19 cases show major weekly rise, OPH says

Ottawa Public Health on Wednesday reported three more deaths due to COVID-19, as well as 207 new cases over the seven days ending Monday.

The new data collected Tuesday brings the total number of deaths to 1,136, while 94,917 cases of COVID-19 have been registered since the pandemic began.
